Raine was in an uncharacteristically unhappy mood. Usually the bouncy young woman could make herself be happy no matter what. She was skilled and putting a smile on her face and bouncing around like nobody’s business to the music in her ears or the melody in her head. She had no problems finding the happiness in just about anything and totally emmersing herself in it without looking back or getting turned down or upset. She was able to make herself happy, it was a skill she treasured.
She had learned to do it after the issue with her mother and sister. She shook her head. Issue? Had she really just thought of what had happened as an issue? Had she really pushed them that far out of her thoughts? She couldn’t believe she had done that. She shook her head and kept walking. It hadn’t been an issue, it had been a tragedy. A true tragedy that had left a mark on Raine that would never go away.
And it wasn’t a mark like most people probably thought of a mark. It hadn’t turned her sad and sullen, it hadn’t made her retreat inside herself. Not in the way that most people probably thought she should have retreated anyway. In an effort to honor her sister that would never get a chance to live, she had decided instead to become more like her sister. Selene had been the loud and wild one, not Raine, and so that was what Raine had become. She refused to let herself get all down in the dumps, she was living for her sister and her mother now.
Their lives had been ripped from them so soon. It wasn’t right. So Raine had found a way to make it be right in the best way that she could possibly think of. She had done her best to make it right by living for them.
As such, Raine rarely, if ever, frowned. She tried to see the light side in everything. That was why it was so odd that she was feeling so out of sorts today, she was letting her sadness catch up with her. She never let the sadness catch up with her. That was why she had a tattoo on her back that read that she should laugh now and cry later, it was perfect for her. But of course it was, it was done by Easton, and he had an affinity for these things.
She sighed, thinking about Easton. Maybe that was why she was so out of sorts right now. She missed him terribly. She hadn’t seen him in so long, it was enough to make the bubbly girl frown and sigh. She wondered where he was, what he was up to. She missed him, she wasn’t sure what to do with herself without him. Not like she was one of those girls that fawned over her man and was a horrible wreck without said boyfriend, she rarely ever had a boyfriend after all, so there wasn’t much for her to fawn over and miss, she wasn’t used to having one.
Perhaps it was because her best friend and roommate was such a mess. Seph was always curled up in her bed with a carton full of ice cream and every time Raine turned around she was crying, it worried Raine something terrible. Seph was supposed to be the strong one, she was the solid one that never seemed to falter, and here she was sobbing and a mess. Raine was never sure what to do with her. Sometimes the two of them ended up in bed, with Raine curled around Seph so that way the other woman could get some sleep. It upset Raine to no end to see Seph like that, either way.
And Raine had thought that Seth was so good for Seph, he was making her open up and trust people again, he was making her laugh. It all seemed so perfect! And then he had to go and ruin it. She would possibly think about setting that right later, because she still thought he was perfect for her, she just had to fix up his stupid screw up. She figured that she would talk to him and make him go and fix this, but she had been so busy with Seph lately, she hadn’t been paying much attention to anyone else.
She had left her room a little while ago to head to dance, but she hadn’t actually made it to her dance class, which was also odd for Raine who practically lived for her dance classes. Instead she had picked up a red rose for herself, not sure who she was even going to give it to but the man selling them had seemed so nice that she hadn’t been able to resist, and it wasn’t like she didn’t have cash to burn, thanks to her Daddy. She still had to tell Seph about her daddy, didn’t she? Heck she still had to tell her about her sister and mother.
But Daddy was important. Daddy was the one who was currently dying and wanted Raine home soon. Raine frowned about that. She didn’t want to go home, but he said if she didn’t he would take back all of her mother’s things and disown her. Raine shrugged her mother’s leather jacket around herself closer and frowned, her storm colored eyes close to tears. She didn’t want to lose this, she didn’t!
So that was how Raine, somehow, ended up sitting alone on a swing in the middle of a park, staring down at a rose that she held in between her hands, slowly twirling it back and forth with tears brimming in her eyes. There were too many things wrong today, how was she supposed to be herself? She worried about everyone who seemed so upset, she worried about what she was going to do with herself…it was too much.
”Happy Birthday to me” she whispered softly towards the rose, and then sighed.
