Welcome to the end of your life.
That’s what the signs of Mortui Amanti said, or at least had spray painted onto them. Mortui Amanti is an old town built on the edge of Long Island, in what humans call the fog, but beyond the fog there is this town, that thrives off obedience. Within this place those who act outside of the laws set up by the “people of the mist” were punished in two ways, one would be the simple lashings that were preformed in the square, the other way well... The mill; a workhouse ran by the guards of Mortui Amanti who only wanted to cause pain and teach their workers how to learn obedience and to obey the people of the mist.
Now there are some who don’t believe in that ideal, who believe that they should break away from the olden teachings and tyrannical overlords and finally escape out into the real world, but the people of the mist won’t have that, if you are found to be one of the rebels then you automatically put to death or if you’re lucky the mill, but there is no escaping the torture that lays before you if you choose such a fate. The rebels have long disbanded though, only coming back now, on mentions of new people of the mist being born.
Now it was an honor to be born a person of the mist, so they say, but those of the mist undergo a transformation within their teenage years when their powers kick in, they lose memories of the past and only remember that of what their doctors and the people of the mist have programmed into their heads. People of the mist aren’t born much, they tend to be a rarity that are greatly feared and praised, they aren’t born on account that they live lengthened lives, almost 100 years beyond that of a normal human, but with the time suspension of the fog who really realizes this? No one, everyone in this town has a predetermined death, made by the people of the mist themselves, but the question was, who decided their deaths? Anyways, enough of a history lesson, onto the task at hand.
Beep... Beep... Beep... Beep...
The constant beeping sound filled the mill, another attempt. The guard watching the beeping room sighed and looked in, he had liked that boy, he really did, too bad it was time for his end, obedience was necessary in the mill and suicide was against the law, the mill was the step before death and if you break the law in the mill, death came easily for you. Well not easily, no one was allowed to die if they broke a rule in the mill, the lived in suspended death, a matrix between living and death where you can feel everything, the pain, the bleeding, the hurt that you felt before you had passed, but it was never-ending, pain filled your hours till your voice goes hoarse with pain, sometimes they return you from that state and let you live, other times they let you die, but more often than not, they left you suspended there, forever. This guard knew that feeling; he had been to hell and back.
This guard was known as Josh, he was one of the new guards, drafted after the loss of their last few ones, the rebellion was getting tougher they had killed guards last week, and stole some people in suspension, including who was to be a new guard, if it wasn’t for Ayama they would have a strong new guard, but Josh was happy slightly, the guard had been the suspension guard, it sucked to be them, completely robotic, obeying to anyone whom had the crest of the people of the mist.
Now this kid, his name was Pride, he was a caring kid, he did anything for the younger kids of the mill, Josh admired that chivalry, it was respectable, but not obedient. Josh really wondered if Pride had truly committed suicide, he wasn’t the type, he was too... Hopeful. He kept speaking of some Raea that he would return to one day, as Pride always said. Josh walked into the room, the beeps resounding, he looked at the time and knew it was time for the pretty boy to wake up, Josh moved his hand over to a red button that laid on the heart monitor, clicking it, Josh watched as he heard a charging sound said and then Pride jolt. Electric shocks. It was an efficient way to wake up patients, or at least that was the instruction he had been given, Josh watched Pride’s eyes open before they slipped closed and he fell back, Josh knew it was a common thing for them to do, they were tired, all they wanted was sleep. Josh turned the button, flinching at the fact he was turn up the electrical shocks, he pressed it once more and watched Pride jolt in pain, he felt bad for the kid, but he had to.
“Did you find him?!” Screeched a very tiny raven haired female, her silken hair pulled into a ponytail that lay over her shoulders. Everyone looked up at her and sighed, they were checking through the suspensions they stole as quickly as possible but no avail so far, they didn’t want to anger Ayama, or better known to her group as Miyuki, the chibi demon in question put her hands on her hips and glared, she wanted to find him now! She wasn’t asking anymore, she was demanding it. “I found him!” One voice called, Miyuki smiled, Mayumi found him! Miyuki was very pleased with her younger sister, her lithe form slipping in between people and suspensions; eventually she reached the back of the room where her sister sat with a young male.
This young male was a huge puzzle piece in Miyuki’s world and she almost had him back, but she didn’t want him back, at least, not like this, not stuck in suspension, the idea of him being stuck like this made tears reach her eyes, they threatened to spill but a hand gingerly touching her shoulder calmed her, looking up, she saw her twin looking back at her. They weren’t twins by blood or by appearance but by love, they had both made a bond between girls that couldn’t be interrupted. “He’s back.” Miyuki’s twin said, looking at her before looking up and smirked, she could see her Flail waving. “He’s not back, not yet. You know that Cris.” Miyuki hissed coldly, she didn’t mean to come off so coldly but she couldn’t help it, she had pretty much lost him and now he was in complete pain, now she had to bring him back. Alive.
Cris looked upwards and watched Justin, her Flail running towards the two of them, he tripped over of the boys in suspension and fell on his face, gaining a laugh from the twins, behind him another young girl moved over, she was quite beautiful as were the twins but all for different reasons. “He’s back?!” Justin yelled, pushing himself off the ground and running over, he looked at Cris, asking a question with his eyes and Cris shook her head, a flicker of sadness flashed over Justin’s eyes for a moment, before he shook himself out of it, he was the happy one, the little glimmer of happiness in their dark world, he couldn’t afford to be sad, despite the loss.
“Raea... I’m sorry. Pride isn’t here, he probably isn’t in suspension.” Mayumi piped up, breaking everyone out of the revere just noticing that Mayumi and Raea had been speaking with one another about the raid, Raea held tears in her eyes but she held a strong face, she didn’t want to cry not now, not at this proud moment. “Alright then,” Raea pursed her lips and blinked tears from her eyes before continuing, “I can’t find a cure for suspension right now, but I’m close.” Miyuki licked her blood red lips and looked at Cris, unsure of what to say, Raea had lost her love, while her sister’s by bond, had theirs, she was in pain, so much pain, but she knew that Miyuki was still in loss of Colby’s conscious state and Cris, had yet to admit anything to Justin, so they might be in one boat but in different areas.
“Alright, enough sombre moments. Colby’s back.”
Pride took in shaky breaths, the shocks had stopped long ago, but the electricity stayed in his system, striking him every move he made, Pride flinched and a wave of shocks went through him, racking his body in pain. Tears wouldn’t come, he had dealt with them, a year ago when he had first joined this forsaken place, Pride looked at his guard and saw sad eyes, he actually cared? Pride noticed he wasn’t in the hospital room he had seen only two awakening shocks ago, but he was in a bedroom, that quite obviously belonged to a guard, most likely his guard’s room, he looked around and saw a boy, who laid there on a metal table, still, his eyes open but glazed over, he stared up at the ceiling but showed no knowledge of it being there, Pride could hear something coming from the boy’s lips, it was whimpers and names being called; “Josh, Justin, Sawyer... Anybody?” Was the exact thing that spilled from the comatose boy’s lips and moving to get a better look at the boy, despite the shocks he noticed something, it was Squall.
He wanted to say something, anything, Pride knew this was one of his few male friends, he was in complete shock, his friend was in suspension? He remembered Squall being there for the time he was taken away, but then Squall had been taken away and put straight into suspension? That was an odd case, unless he was a person of the mist’s special people, those who were a person of the mist but more powerful and important. Pride doubted it though, Squall was seventeen last he had seen the boy and there was no chance that Squall had been able to be unfound as a person of the mist after the age sixteen, they always found them, in or out of suspension, that’s why Pride had to be careful.
Pride had a secret and he was going to keep it like that. He knew he was important one of them, that he bore the mark, but he kept it quite low key, the mark was even so greatly hidden that not even Raea would be able to find it, and she could find any marring on his body. Pride was using a charm, given to him by Miyuki’s lost younger brother to protect himself from being found, he had found out Pride and had given him the charm, but Pride always wondered, how he had found out and how he had gotten such a charm.
Secrets were left secrets for reasons, Pride assumed, he looked at the guard and noticed something, this guard was Squall’s lover, he smiled at that, though Josh wasn’t able to pull Squall out of suspension he was keeping him in his room for safety, Pride found that sweet and smiled, but then the smile quickly as he remembered his Raea.
Josh looked at Pride and sighed, he wondered what his boyfriend’s old friend would think of Squall now, he was stuck in suspension, whimpering, sometimes begging for help, he would scream at times other times he would just whisper it, and Josh couldn’t help him, he felt useless, if he couldn’t help the one he loved the most than what could he do? Josh wanted return Squall to his normal self go home he wanted that more than anything.
He wanted a time for freedom in this land of obedience, sadly that was a thought only more for dreamers.
